Leaky roof forces postponement of Purdue-Maryland women’s basketball game

In College Park, Md., heavy rain caused a leak in the roof, leading to the postponement of Maryland’s women’s basketball game against Purdue on Saturday.

The game, scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. ET, had to be delayed as water seeped onto the court during warmups.

Efforts were made to divert the water, but unfortunately they were unsuccessful after a 30-minute wait.

Maryland’s athletic director Damon Evans explained, “We wanted to see if we could divert the water off the roof into a different direction, but unfortunately we weren’t able to accomplish that. We were hoping it would stop, but it just didn’t.”

The possibility of using an auxiliary gym within Maryland’s arena was considered, but Purdue did not feel comfortable with that alternative.

Both teams will now work on finding a suitable makeup date within the next 48 hours, with Evans stating, “Right now we don’t know. We might look to next week. We have an opening next week. We want to make sure it fits both programs.”

Purdue is set to host No. 4 Iowa on Wednesday, with its next game scheduled for Jan. 18. Maryland, on the other hand, will play at Michigan State on Tuesday and will then have a break until Jan. 17.
