WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) put forth the subsequent declaration concerning the third anniversary of the January 6th riot:
“Three years back, we observed the deadliest and most ruinous assault on our Capitol since the War of 1812. What transpired on January 6, 2021 was a violent uprising — an effort to hinder the confirmation of a open-handed and impartial election.
“Following the evacuation of the House floor that day, I found myself confined in the Gallery with roughly 30 other members. I recall hearing the relentless pounding on the doors, the cries and shouts of those attempting to overpower the establishment and those risking their lives to protect it.
“I was uncertain if I would survive, and regrettably, some of the valiant officers who fought to safeguard us tragically perished. The sacrifices they made for our country will never be forgotten, and I am infinitely appreciative to all those who helped uphold our democracy that day.
“However, the dreadful occurrences did not conclude after January 6th — the former president and numerous within his party persist to this day in inciting political violence. This brought about significant incidents across the nation, including an individual arriving at my residence armed, uttering threats and obscenities.
“The January 6th Committee accomplished remarkable work, exposing distressing details and demonstrating to the nation just how close we came to sacrificing our democracy that day. The Department of Justice has also continued to hold those who stormed the Capitol responsible — an essential measure in ensuring this never repeats.
“As a Member of Congress, I witness democracy in action nearly every day, and it is a marvelous thing. Those who endeavor to subvert and dismantle it have no place in positions of authority — not in the House, not in the Senate, and certainly not in the presidency.
“Democracy is hallowed. It is a principle we must consistently interact with as we strive to safeguard and enhance America. Three years following the dreadful events of January 6th, I am grateful for the democracy we still possess and am more steadfast than ever in preserving its existence.
“We must all recall that Jan 6th, 2025 may be right around the corner as we approach another presidential election. Nearly a third of Americans still believe Donald Trump’s fabrications that the 2020 election was pilfered. We must all take a stand and labor to safeguard our democracy and bear in mind just how vulnerable it is.”
Jayapal was confined in the House Gallery on January 6th, after numerous members had been evacuated from the chamber. In the aftermath, she has been an outspoken detractor of President Trump’s involvement in the insurrection and joins a coalition of members that are initiating legal proceedings against the former President for his involvement on that day.
