Approaching the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, the struggling institution is striving to complete its rebranding process.
Following a 2021 L.A. Times investigation that uncovered the lack of diversity and questionable ethical and financial practices within the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., the organization was disbanded, and the show was taken over by billionaire Todd Boehly’s private equity firm and Penske Media, the publisher of Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.
After an extensive makeover focusing on diversifying the voting body, broadening viewership, and generating profits, the Globes organizers state that the celebration is on.
When is the event? How can I observe it?
The 81st Golden Globe Awards — the inaugural event of the 2024 awards season — will be broadcast on Jan. 7 at 5 p.m. Pacific time on CBS and will be available for streaming on Paramount+. Different terms apply for different levels of subscribers. Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers in the U.S. can watch the event live and on demand, while Paramount+ Essential subscribers can watch on demand the day after the special airs in the U.S. exclusively. The show will be televised from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Viewers can also tune in early to the Variety and “Entertainment Tonight” pre-show, which will be streamed live from the red carpet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Pacific time on Variety.com, ETOnline.com, GoldenGlobes.com and YouTube.
Who will host the event?
The ceremony will be led by stand-up comedian Jo Koy, who appears more inclined toward lighthearted humor than previous emcees Ricky Gervais and Jerrod Carmichael, whose jokes were deemed too cutting for the awards’ taste.
“A lot of [Koy’s] comedy is family-oriented, so I don’t anticipate it to be as malicious as you might expect,” stated Ricky Kirshner, the executive producer and showrunner of the telecast, to The Times.
Koy has released five highly-rated stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, featured in the Improv’s 60th anniversary Netflix special, and recently completed his Funny is Funny World Tour.
And he aims to deliver at what was long hyped as “Hollywood’s Party of the Year.”
“As a child, watching TV and lacking many indirect role models to inspire me, that is what this signifies to me,” the Filipino American actor
“This is a wonderful moment. I truly aim to make sure I excel at this,” he expressed.
What’s in contention?
The nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards were unveiled last month, with “Barbie” securing nine nominations, leading the pack. Its counterpart, “Oppenheimer,” follows closely with eight nominations. Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” each gathered seven nods.
In the television categories, HBO’s “Succession” tops the list with nine nominations, trailed by Hulu series “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building,” each with five.

Who will be present?
The event’s attendees will encompass numerous Hollywood stars, with their every move captured by the 72 cameras dispersed across the Beverly Hilton ballroom.
“We truly want this to feel like you are present at the party while you are watching,” stated Glenn Weiss, who alongside Kirshner serves as an executive producer and showrunner, to The Times.
With the previous year’s viewership (6.25 million viewers) pale in comparison to the viewership in pre-investigation years (19 million in 2019), a star-studded guest list and an immersive viewing experience might just be the party elements the awards show necessitates.
