The actor Christian Oliver, known for his roles in ‘Speed Racer,’ dies in an airplane accident

On Thursday, a tragic incident occurred as the small aircraft carrying the film and television actor Christian Oliver, along with his two children and a pilot, crashed during a flight to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, as confirmed by the police.

The 51-year-old Mr. Oliver, recognized for his appearances in “The Good German,” “Speed Racer,” and the TV series “Saved by The Bell: The New Class,” was accompanied by his daughters as the sole passengers on the single-engine plane traveling from Bequia, an island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, when it plummeted into the sea at midday, according to the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force statement on Thursday.

The police also disclosed the tragic death of Mr. Oliver’s daughters, Madita Klepser, 10, and Annik Klepser, 12, as well as the pilot, Robert Sachs. The bodies were recovered by fishermen and divers and handed over to the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard, stated the police in a release on Friday.

The aircraft encountered difficulties and crashed into the ocean shortly after departing from J.F. Mitchell Airport in Bequia, according to the police, who mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.

Born in Germany, Mr. Oliver held dual citizenship in Germany and the United States, stated his agent in Berlin, Caprice Crawford, in an email on Friday. Known professionally as Christian Oliver, he divided his time between Los Angeles and his home country, as per Crawford.

Mr. Oliver’s work includes his role in the 2006 film “The Good German,” alongside George Clooney and Cate Blanchett, as well as appearances in “Valkyrie” with Tom Cruise in 2008 and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” in 2023, where he provided voices.

Shortly before the tragic event, he had wrapped up filming for a new movie, “Forever Hold Your Peace,” sharing a photo from the set on social media about a week prior.

In the days leading up to the accident, Mr. Oliver posted his final photograph “from somewhere in paradise.”

Co-producing “Forever Hold Your Peace,” a film centered around marriage fraud, with the director Nick Lyon, Mr. Oliver had messaged him about his plan to return to the United States to work on a scene, stated Mr. Lyon in an interview on Friday.

“It was a significant project for us,” expressed Mr. Lyon, who had also collaborated with Mr. Oliver on “Hercules Reborn” in 2014. “We had been discussing it for years.”
